In July 1994, we rescued Fred, a 15 1/2 year old Great Dane mix, abandoned at a business which closed unexpectedly after he had spent his entire life there.
Despite his lack of training and socialization, he grew to become one of the best dogs we will ever get the chance to know. He dispelled the myth that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks."
It quickly came to our attention that there were many pets like Fred, older or disabled, abandoned by their former guardians. We started The Fred Fund to provide lifetime care for these pets.
On Ocober 4, 1997, we lost our beloved friend to cancer, diagnosed 2 1/2 months prior. Despite his age and terminal illness, he acted much younger than his 18 years until just before his death. The special fund named after him has been renamed the Fred Memorial Fund. It continues to help those elderly and disabled pets who have been abandoned and have nowhere else to go.
